'Women are afraid that men will kill them' is a quote often attributed to Atwood and when we look at the lines in This is photograph of Me 'the photograph was taken the day after I drowned' we can see that this poem is
immersed in a kind of subtle horror. There is serene imagery 'lake, low hills, small frame house' but it conceals something darker and more foreboding 'I am in the lake, just under the surface.' Why choose murder or death as a metaphor for the marginalised woman? Because she is clearly trying to emphasise that feminism has not yet achieved its goals, that women's voices are not yet being heard, that the female presence is still secondary to that of man. ________________________________________
Speeches for school Intro: Thesis: - what is your main idea about the poetry? Poems: - which poems are you going to be discussing and why Context: - how does Atwood's personal, social, historical context affect her writing EXAMPLE: Essay: (Intro) At the heart of Margaret Atwood's poetry is a deeply personal engagement with issues in which she has passionately involved herself over the course of her career as a writer, speaker, political and environmental activist and feminist. Her two poems Siren Song and This is a Photograph of Me particularly reflect her feminist views on the role of women in contemporary society and challenge the prevailing patriarchal paradigm. In This is a Photograph of Me she gives voice to women's repressed or marginalised concerns and in Siren Song she offers an alternative, feminist perspective to Homer's iconic Odyssey, allowing us, as her audience, to question existing societal structures and develop a broader and deeper understanding of the complexities of the values that underpin our attitudes and behaviours. Speech: (Intro) Margaret Atwood is renowned for her writing, her speaking and her activism. She is passionate about many issues such as women's rights, politics and the environment and this is reflected in all of her work . One concern that she deals with over and over again in her writing is the role of women in the world - she explores how the patriarchal values of society undermine their identity and autonomy. We see this most clearly in Siren Song and This is a Photograph of Me. In Siren Song she offers an alternative, feminist perspective to Homer's iconic Odyssey and in This is a Photograph of Me she attempts to give voice to marginalised and repressed women's concerns. She offers us the opportunity to re-examine the complex values that underpin the contemporary attitudes and beliefs that still shape our society. _______________________________________ |
