CHOOSING AN ENGLISH COURSE
ADVANCED ENGLISH (2 UNITS)
- 5 texts across the course
- Shakespeare is compulsory
- Text types include prose fiction, poetry, film or drama or multimedia and non-fiction
- some 19th century and early 20th century literature
- Suitable for students who are good at English, enjoy English and are ready to be engaged by challenging and complex ideas
(STANDARD ENGLISH (2 UNITS)
- 4 texts across the course
- Shakespeare may be included but is not compulsory
- Text types include poetry, prose fiction, non-fiction, drama and film
- Texts are often drawn from more modern contexts
- Suitable for students for whom English is not their favourite subject or who prefer to focus on other subjects
ESL (2 UNITS)
- This course is for students who have a language background other than English and who meet the prerequisites outlined by BOSTES
- It is a modified course that follows a similar pattern to Standard English
- Students study a range of text types
- Students engage in critical and creative writing and wide reading
ENGLISH STUDIES (2 UNIT NON-ATAR COURSE)
- Students who undertake this course KNOW they will not go to University straight from school
- This course is designed to improve communication skills in a range of contexts
- A range of modules are studied and assessed
- Development of critical thinking skills
ENGLISH EXTENSION 1 (1 UNIT)
- You MUST be studying Advanced to undertake this course
- 3 compulsory texts are studied across the course
- Students choose a range of their own related material
- ONE module is undertaken across the course
- Suitable for students who excel in English and enjoy critical analysis and critical and creative writing
ENGLISH EXTENSION 2 (1 UNIT YEAR !2)
- Only available to students already studying Extension 1
- Involves the creation of a major project such as a short story, video, suite of poems, script, speech
- It is a research based course that must demonstrate solid links with the Advanced and Extension courses
- This course is for self-motivated and creative students who want to extend their knowledge, skills and understanding of critical and creative composition
FUNDAMENTALS OF ENGLISH (1 UNIT)
English - Fundamentals ~ 1 Unit Preliminary or HSC
The Fundamentals of English course addresses the literacy needs of students undertaking the course and assists students to use
the English language effectively in their study and for vocational and other purposes. The course is designed for students who
need additional time and assistance.
